The Opportunity:


We are looking for an Assistant General Counsel with two to five years of experience in Columbus. In this role, you will assist the Legal, Compliance, and Governance teams in a variety of duties with the goal of helping Root to think critically about the needs of our customers and our business operations.

This position is Hybrid and requires the role to be primarily in the Columbus, Ohio office.

Salary Range: $108,000 to $135,000

How you will make an impact

  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of contracts and agreements.

  • Develop and update contract templates, enhance contracting procedures, and provide training on contract procedures, as necessary.

  • Advise on data privacy laws and regulations.

  • Provide support for corporate governance related matters, including review and preparation of board and committee materials, annual stockholder meetings, policy documents and securities filings.

  • Stay abreast of changes in laws and regulations affecting the company and provide proactive legal counsel and assist the General Counsel in doing the same.

  • Assist and support other internal departments such as finance, accounting, tax, operations, and investor relations on legal matters, on as needed basis.

  • Integrating with the team and participating on a variety of projects to provide clear and actionable legal research and work product.

  • Interacting and communicating effectively within the legal team and with our business partners.

What you will need to succeed

  • Two to five years of experience, preferably in a law firm, regulatory entity or a company that is publicly traded or that is in a heavily regulated industry. e.g. insurance, healthcare, financial services, etc.

  • Excellent academic credentials and graduation from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

  • Ability to work independently with strong self-motivation

  • Strong legal research skills using WestLaw, Wolters Kluwer, Trade Association resources (APCIA), and other sources.

  • Self-starter mentality and ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work.

  • Ability to build collaborative working relationships.

  • Comfort in an environment with ambiguity and ability to adapt when changes occur.

  • Ability to speak and partner effectively in a matrixed environment.

  • Dedicated sense of professionalism and ethical conduct.
