CURRENT ROOT EMPLOYEES - Please apply using the career page in Workday. This career site is for external applicants only.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join our Claims Engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for both technical leadership and mentorship, and coaching among your team. Leads should be our strongest team contributors and we expect them to exceed all of the technical and non-technical expectations of a Senior Software Engineer.

Root’s Claims Systems reached comparable capabilities in a few years with small teams of engineers to an industry characterized by large, slow-moving, megalithic companies. Now we want to be more than comparable, but to truly “unbreak” insurance. Claims is the true product our customers purchased. It is up to us to fulfill that promise the way it should be kept. Not with unfeeling AI, but human empathy guiding thoughtful automation; AI and machine learning where it makes sense mixed into human-centric designs throughout.

Root is a technology company revolutionizing personal insurance with a pricing model based upon fairness and a modern customer experience. With its technology-forward products, Root is working to fundamentally change an industry for the better.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus and offices in other locations to give more flexibility and more choice about how we live and work.

Salary Range: $126,400 to $160,000

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Design durable and extendable solutions using new and existing patterns.

  • Identify risks and opportunities for improvements in our codebase and domain.

  • Recommend upgrades for existing systems and programs.

  • Document designs and projects with clear writing, diagrams, flowcharts, and models that support peers’ and non-technical teammates’ understanding.

  • Communicate risks and progress of projects or features.

  • Provide feedback to peers and the team on code quality, system design, and team and department processes.

  • Coach individuals on developing their professional and personal skills, improving the whole team’s performance.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 2+ years of experience working as a lead developer.

  • Experience working with Ruby on Rails.

  • Experience working with Javascript / React Native frontend, Mocha for testing.

  • Exposure working with native iOS and Android.

  • Fluent usage of version control tools.

  • Experience deploying to AWS.

  • Familiarity with Buildkite for continuous integration.

  • Advanced knowledge of databases and SQL.

  • The ability to write clean, functional, well-tested code.

  • The ability to follow existing patterns and aim for consistency with the rest of the code.

  • Willingness to take on larger feature work and bug fixes.

  • The capability to understand and take business goals into account when making implementation decisions.

  • Skilled in providing constructive feedback on other teammates’ work in code reviews.

  • Strong mentorship skills, with a desire to work with their engineering teammates to answer questions about their work.

  • Skills in developing software verification plans, automated unit tests, and quality assurance procedures.

  • Experience deploying programs and evaluating user feedback.

  • Compliance with project plans and industry standards.

  • Deep understanding of dynamic languages, client-server architecture, and web technologies.

  • Adequate understanding of infrastructure and DevOps.
